Elderly driver injured after blacking out, colliding with truck in Panama

PANAMA – An elderly motorist suffered serious injuries early Wednesday when he blacked out while driving and collided with an oncoming truck in the Chautauqua County Town of Panama, sheriff’s deputies reported.

Siegfried F. Selle, 83, of Ashville, was driving west on East Main Street when he crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with the side of a delivery truck driven by Blaydon F. Niles, 23, of Falconer. Deputies said Selle was suffering from an unknown medical condition that caused him to black out.

The accident was reported at 8:33 a.m. Wednesday.

Selle, who was trapped in his vehicle, was freed by firefighters, then airlifted to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa. His 76-year-old wife, Inga, was taken by ambulance to the same hospital for treatment of minor injuries, deputies said.

Niles was taken to WCA Hospital in Jamestown with minor injuries, deputies said.
