Falls murder trial expected to go to jury Thursday

LOCKPORT – The prosecution rested its case Wednesday after only two days of testimony in the fast-moving Darrell J. Belton Jr. murder trial, and the State Supreme Court jury is expected to begin deliberating Thursday.

Belton, 18, of Whitney Avenue, Niagara Falls, is charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in the Sept. 23 slaying of William A. Reilly, 30, who was shot to death in front of his girlfriend and her two children in their home on Pierce Avenue in the Falls. The woman, Tiffany Garcia, testified that Reilly was killed after he objected to Belton showing up late to deliver a $10 bag of marijuana Reilly had ordered.

Lead defense counsel Jeremy D. Schwartz said he does not expect Belton to testify in his own defense.
