A woman who advertised house-cleaning services on Craigslist was charged with stealing more than $10,000 in jewelry from a client in the Town of Tonawanda, police reported Monday.
Michele Eubanks, also known as Michele Carter, 39, of Wehrle Drive, Amherst, was charged Friday with a felony count of grand larceny.
The thefts were discovered late last month, after Eubanks had cleaned the home in the area of Englewood Avenue and Parker Boulevard several times. “The victims knew her only by her first name and a cellphone number,” said Capt. Joseph F. Carosi, a police department spokesman.
After the victims filed a police report June 1, detectives interviewed Eubanks and she denied any role in the thefts. A follow-up investigation led investigators to a local pawn shop where the jewelry was sold, and Eubanks was positively identified as the seller, Carosi said.
When confronted with the evidence, Eubanks reportedly confessed.
“There are some pieces that were not recovered,” Carosi said. “A vast majority of them were.”
The pawn shop has records of Eubanks selling other jewelry, leading police to believe there are additional victims.
“Anybody that hired her may have, very well, been a victim and not realized it yet,” Carosi said.
