Canal poem to be unveiled Wednesday

LOCKPORT – The text of a poem, to be painted on the pavement of Canal Street, is to be unveiled at 5 p.m. Wednesday in front of 51 Canal St.

Ellen Martin, organizer of numerous summertime events, presented the poem, by the late Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh, to the Common Council in March.

The poem, “Lines Written on a Seat on the Grand Canal, Dublin,” mentions locks and a canal and uses the made-up word “niagarously,” so Martin deemed it suitable for an Erie Canal promotion in Lockport.

“It just fits us,” Martin said. “Also, we are able to do the project with the kind permission of the estate of Katherine Kavanagh, and of course the City of Lockport approved this public art project.”
