Amherst doctor indicted on federal drug fraud and health care fraud charges

A 37-year-old Amherst doctor initially arrested in April in a drug-related investigation was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury on charges carrying a prison term of up to 20 years and a fine of up to $1 million if he is convicted.

Albert R. Cowie, a radiologist, faces arraignment on a 10-count indictment charging him with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance by fraud, conspiracy to commit a drug felony and health care fraud. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, in announcing the indictment, did not indicate when Cowie faces arraignment on the indictment,, He is accused of writing 280 illegal prescriptions for controlled substances between January 2010 and March 22, 2014.
