Road to the NHL Draft: Caleb Jones

Caleb Jones

Position: Defenseman

Junior team: U.S. Under-18 (USHL)

Born: Arlington, Texas

Measurables: 6-foot, 194 pounds

2014-15 stats: 56 games, six goals, 13 assists, 19 points

Central Scouting rank: No. 115 (North America)

Lowdown: Heading into the 2013 draft, it was impossible to avoid talk of Seth Jones. The defenseman had a chance to be the first American picked No. 1 overall since Patrick Kane, and he got additional attention for being the son of former NBA player Popeye Jones. The Joneses will be part of this year’s draft, too, but the spotlight isn’t as bright.

Caleb Jones could be a mid- to late-round pick. While he’s got some of the athletic talent possessed by his brother, he lacks the size. Seth was 4 inches taller heading into his draft, which allowed him to wow scouts by using his wingspan to prevent players from skating around him. Caleb is thicker and more eager to hit. Like his brother, he likes to pinch and become part of the offense.

Caleb hasn’t had the offensive success of his brother, putting up similar points with the U.S. team despite playing 30 more games. Like Seth, Caleb will head to Portland of the Western Hockey League to continue his development.

They said it: “Caleb is an excellent two-way defenseman who will play a big role on our blue line next season. The experience he's had playing for the national development program and in international play is an enormous asset for him.”– Jamie Kompon, coach and general manager of Portland.

The Buffalo News is profiling 30 prospects in 30 days leading up to the NHL Draft, which will be held June 26-27.
