‘I Love Lucy’ benefit to aid girl, 11, who is recovering from illness

CAMBRIA – Friends and neighbors will hold an “I Love Lucy Benefit” for 11-year-old Lucy Ebbole and her family at 4 p.m. next Sunday at the Cambria Volunteer Fire Hall, 4631 Cambria-Wilson Road.

A pasta dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m., with a basket auction draw at 7 p.m. Live music also will be featured.

The fundraiser will help offset expenses incurred during Lucy’s recent one-month stay at Women’s & Children’s Hospital in Buffalo.

“Neighbors and good friends wanted to do something for the family to show our support, and the family finally agreed,” said longtime neighbor Howard Morgan, one of the organizers.

Lucy is the daughter of Mike and Jennifer Ebbole of Cambria. Mike works in the information technology department and Jennifer is a secretary in the athletic department at Niagara University, where Morgan is associate director of alumni and volunteer engagement. Their daughters are also involved in 4-H together.

“Many NU employees have volunteered their time, donated food and money for this,” Morgan said.

Morgan noted that Mike Ebbole is a familiar face around the Cambria Fire Hall, where he has donated countless hours working on the fire company’s computers and sound systems for events.

“We transported Lucy and her dad to the hospital when she became ill,” said Morgan, who is a member of the fire company. “This is a tight-knit community and Mike has done a lot for the fire company.

“Lucy was at Children’s Hospital for 27 days and her mom and dad stayed with her the whole time,” he said, declining to detail her illness. “She’s back to school, full-time, at Stella Niagara now. And even though she’s still on the road to recovery, she’s back much quicker than we thought, so this benefit is also a nice little celebration, too.”

Organizers planned the benefit to help pay some medical bills that were not covered and to help with other expenses incurred while Lucy’s parents had to take nearly a month off from work.

Basket donations for the raffle will be accepted from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the fire hall, or before the event starts next Sunday.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children five to 12 and pre-sale tickets may be purchased from Morgan at 417-7584, Kit Straub at 353-0712 or in the Niagara Campus Ministry Office, Gallagher Center, Lower Level. Tickets also will be available at the door.

Funds may be sent to: FBO Lucy c/o Alliance Credit Union, P.O. Box 258, Sanborn, NY 14132 or hand-delivered to the credit union office on the Niagara campus.
