Nicholas F. Salinardo of Tonawanda, a funeral director and proprietor of several funeral homes, died unexpectedly Saturday in Kenmore Mercy Hospital. He was 84.
Born in Buffalo, “Sonny” as he was known, graduated from Hutchinson-Central High School in 1949 and earned a degree in accounting from Bryant & Stratton Business Institute. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
For 54 years, Mr. Salinardo served as a funeral director in the Buffalo metropolitan area. After receiving his license from Simmons School of Embalming and Mortuary Science in 1957, he worked at Dietrich Funeral Home for 10 years. Later, he served as a proprietor of Franz-Salinardo Funeral Home and Salinardo Funeral Home on Grider Street, and Lord-Salinardo Funeral Home on Niagara Falls Boulevard. He remained licensed and actively associated with several funeral homes in the area at the time of his death.
Mr. Salinardo was also a supervisor for the Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office for 29 years, retiring in 1996.
He was a member of the Erie Niagara Funeral Directors Association, ECMC Retiree Association, and Knights of St. John Commandery 292 for 30 years.
He served as president of Holy Name Society at St. Bartholomew’s Church and president of the Delavan-Grider Businessmen’s Association.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, the former Sarah T. Rosina; a daughter, Jennifer Marsiello; a sister, Marie Brombos; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Blessed Sacrament Church, 263 Claremont Ave., Tonawanda.
