DARWIN, Mona M.

DARWIN - Mona M. Passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 23, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 14, 1936 in North Tonawanda, NY to the late Hermann and Gertrude (Dudek) Steinig, who immigrated to this great country from Germany in the 1920's. Mona graduated from North Tonawanda High School in 1954 and married the love of her life, Richard Darwin, on July 9, 1955. The first part of her married life was dedicated to homemaking and supporting her husband Richard as he worked his way through three university degrees. In 2008, Richard preceded Mona in death and she now joins him for eternity. Mona is survived by: brother Paul Steinig of North Tonawanda, NY, son, Eric Darwin (Barbara Tewart-Darwin); grandchildren Corey Tewart-Darwin, Allison Tewart-Darwin and Melissa Tewart-Darwin; great-granddaughter, Jordin. Daughters, Karen Darwin (Nancy Brennemann), Laura Darwin (Dana Milligan); grandchildren, Jessica Milligan and Molly Milligan; great-grandchildren Xavier and Atticus. Once Mona's children were grown, she was employed as an office manager and bookkeeper for The Media Group in Columbus, and retired in 1997. She had always been an avid gardener, a skill she learned from her father. In her retirement, she was a founding member and active participant of the Central Ohio Hosta Society and grew about 150 hostas in her yard along with many dwarf conifers. She was also a Franklin County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer, participating in planting programs at the OSU Chadwick Arboretum and at the Waterman Farm. Mona was an extraordinary photographer who enjoyed nothing more than capturing her family's smiles, gorgeous landscapes and her own beautiful flowers. Her husband, Richard, was an accomplished furniture maker and Mona was an integral part of that team as she lovingly sanded and finished the pieces that would become family heirlooms.
A Mass Of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 6899 Smokey Row Road, Worthington, Ohio 43235. A private family burial will take place at the Resurrection Cemetery in Lewis Center, Ohio, and an open house celebration of her life will follow the burial beginning about 1:00 PM at her home. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the OSU Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens, 2001 Fyffe Court, Columbus, Ohio 43210.
