Donald N. Grasso Sr., a retired BOCES administrator and adjunct college professor, died unexpectedly in Buffalo General Hospital on Thursday. The Hamburg resident was 83.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Grasso attended Burgard Vocational High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He worked two jobs to put himself through school and earned his bachelor’s degree from Buffalo State College.
Mr. Grasso started his teaching career in the Town of Lansing in the Southern Tier before moving to Medina and later to Hamburg. His work as principal at the Wallace D. Ormsby Vocational Technical Center in East Aurora earned him the title of administrator of the year in the 1970s and he became director of occupational education for BOCES before retiring from there in the early 1990s.
A lifelong learner, Mr. Grasso earned a master’s degree from Niagara University and a doctorate from the University of Buffalo.
He also was an adjunct professor at SUNY Buffalo State for many years, continuing to teach graduate courses in education for several more years after retiring from BOCES.
During his retirement, he was an active volunteer at St. Anthony’s Church in Lackawanna.
He married the former Catherine Pacillo, who died in 2006.
He is survived by two daughters, Evelyn and Catherine; two sons, Michael and Donald; and a brother, Joseph.
A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Anthony’s Church, 306 Ingham Ave., Lackawanna.
