May 22, 1955: 'The Main St. old-timers knew is vanishing from Buffalo'

As Buffalo’s city leaders looked to the building of highways and programs such as “Urban Renewal” to reinvigorate a city already starting to decline in many respects, many Western New Yorkers barely recognized the downtown Buffalo that was quickly changing into a place with bigger skyscrapers and more parking ramps.

News Reporter Charles Wix's piece looks back at the earliest days at the oldest parts of downtown.

"Buffalo's waterfront is changing so fast that oldtime residents who go down to see what's going on in the lower part of town have to look twice to orient themselves when they approach the old areas they knew so well."
