May 21, 1955: When mom-and-pop corner stores dotted the Buffalo area

Through the first half of the 20th Century, many stores grocery stores like A&P and Loblaw’s offered single weekly flatware, place setting items and cookware pieces so that if you shopped at a particular store every week over the course of a few months, you’d wind up with a complete set.

Sixty years ago this week, Oneida offered Buffalo housewives the ability to upgrade their silverware on a piece by piece basis — if they stopped by their neighborhood corner delicatessen.

This list isn’t exhaustive, but does show dozens of names and locations of the kind of small, independent, mom-and-pop corner stores that dotted the city and suburban main streets in times past.
