Turned down for what? Sabres fans react to Babcock's decision

Optimism ran rampant on Twitter Wednesday morning, as the Buffalo Sabres were a serious contender to land coveted Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock, hours before he wound up choosing to go north of the border to the Sabres' rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Pegula Lovefest was unrelenting due to the pretty penny Buffalo would be willing to pay (in excess of $5 million per year, reputable sources said), and the prospect of a Stanley Cup-winning coach leading Jack Eichel and the Sabres' slew of top prospects had many unable to focus at work.

The best Pegula-related tweets came from Yahoo's Greg Wyshynski, @FrackingSabres and Bills Mafia's Del Reid:

Babcock-to-Buffalo sounded likely on Tuesday afternoon -- The Associated Press reported, from a source, that Babcock was in contract negotiations with the Sabres, but a tweet from SportsNet's John Shannon iced the excitement.

Regardless, several reports on Wednesday morning, the deadline day for #Babwatch, still had the Sabres in competition -- err, a bidding war -- with the Maple Leafs and Red Wings, and Buffalo's hockey fans certainly hadn't given up hope.

When TSN's Bob McKenzie tweeted that the Sabres were eliminated from #Babwatch contention, the tone of Sabres fans turned noticeably sour.

Then, just after 2 p.m., Sabres fans learned that Babcock had signed a contract, worth roughly $50 million over 8 years, to coach the Toronto Maple Leafs.
