The American Red Cross will close three local blood donation centers next month, including the one at its Buffalo headquarters at 786 Delaware Ave., and consolidate their operations in a larger facility in Union Road Plaza, 3601 Union Road at Zoerb Avenue, Cheektowaga.
Final donations will be collected June 22 in the Delaware Avenue location and in the Transitown Plaza Donation Center, 4267 Transit Road, Clarence. Final donations will be June 30 in the Hamburg Donation Center, 5161 Camp Road.
In a letter to blood donors, Kay Schwartz, chief executive officer for the New York-Penn Blood Services Region, said the consolidation will help the Red Cross “operate more efficiently and responsibly.”
The new center will be open seven days a week, beginning June 24. Those who donate at the Union Road center for the first time before Aug. 31 will receive a Donate and Dine meal, courtesy of Ted’s Hot Dogs.
The Red Cross will continue to hold its regularly scheduled blood drives in community locations. The Mid City Plaza Blood Donation Center, 301 Meadow Drive, North Tonawanda, will remain open.
