May 20, 1955: First generation of Buffalo children get vaccinated against polio

A blight on Buffalo and the entire country was solved in the lab of Dr. Jonas Salk in 1954 when Salk found a vaccine against polio.

One year later, 60 year ago this week, Buffalo’s school kids were rolling up their sleeves for Western New York’s first shipment of the new inoculation.

Kids at St. Mary of Sorrows School on Genesee Street and School 76 on Elmwood Avenue are pictured below, nervous about the needle, but no longer nervous about polio.
