Bishop Richard J. Malone will ordain three men as permanent deacons in ceremonies at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Cathedral, 50 Franklin St. They will join more than 130 other deacons in the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo.
They are David Charles Armstrong of Corry, Pa., a retired teacher and a parishioner at Christ Our Hope Parish in French Creek; Peter James Donnelly of Amherst, a product manager at ATTO Technology and a parishioner at St. Gregory the Great Parish in Amherst; and John Alois Owczarczak of Lancaster, a senior design engineer at Carleton Technology and a parishioner at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Lancaster.
Permanent deacons can officiate at weddings, baptisms, funerals and wakes. They also may preach and distribute Holy Communion. The newly-ordained deacons will be assigned to ministry in local hospitals, prisons, parishes or nursing homes.
