May 19, 1955: Buffalo kids loved Mickey Mantle and Davy Crockett

One sport, one team and one player captured the imaginations of the little boys of Buffalo in the 1950s more than any other: Baseball great Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees.

It’s fair to assume that plenty of boys had baseball gloves, but there’s little doubt you would have been the envy of the kids on your street with the Mickey Mantle autograph mitt on sale this week at AM&A’s.

If you couldn’t swing the five bucks for a new mitt, you might have a buck saved up to take to JN’s, where caps from the Yankees, New York Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers, Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers were all on sale this week 60 years ago.

Even if you didn’t like baseball, chances are you loved Davy Crockett — and both Hens & Kelly and Kobacker’s had Davy Crockett gear for boys and girls.
