LOCKPORT – The Lockport Common Council is expected to vote Wednesday on raising Fire Chief Patrick K. Brady’s salary to $76,000 a year from the current $53,500, City Clerk Richelle J. Pasceri said Tuesday.
The raise, which would take effect June 5, was added to the Council agenda as a late item, Pasceri said. The Council had cut the chief’s salary by about $35,000 in this year’s budget, as former Chief Thomas J. Passuite retired in December. But the new pay was below that of assistant chiefs and captains, leading to some reluctance by some internal candidates to accept the chief’s position. Brady, who had been earning $67,230 as a captain, took the job in March upon receiving a promise that the pay would be reviewed at the close of a 12-week probationary period.
Brady, who learned of the proposed raise from a reporter, said he’ll consider it. If he’s not satisfied, he has the option of interviewing before the Fire Board Thursday for an open assistant chief post that pays $74,060.
Mayor Anne E. McCaffrey said she wants Brady to remain chief. “I think he’s done a great job. He’d be a great fit as the permanent chief,” she said.
