NFL co-champs among the top seeds for Section VI softball tournament

Section VI softball officials unveiled the seeding for this spring's tournament Monday night, and the event begins with pre-quarterfinal games Tuesday for some teams.

Niagara Frontier League co-champions Niagara Falls and Grand Island are among the teams to earn top seeds in their respective bracket. Falls, which began the week ranked second in the state, is the top seed in Class AA. The Wolverines receive a bye into the quarterfinals Tuesday, May 26 and will host the winner of defending state runner-up Clarence, a No. 8 seed, versus ninth-seeded Frontier pre-quarterfinal. Clarence-Frontier clash is Thursday.

Orchard Park is the No. 2 seed in Class AA after winning its first ECIC I title since 2004. Lancaster, Niagara-Wheatfield and Williamsville North round out the top five in the bracket.

Grand Island is No. 1 in Class A-1, a bracket that includes defending state champion Williamsville South, which earned a No. 4 seed. No one received byes in the A-1 bracket, which begins play with quarterfinals Thursday with the higher seed as host. Will South faces No. 5 North Tonawanda.

In Class A-2, Starpoint is the top seed followed by Amherst, West Seneca East and Iroquois.

Class B-1 could be the mother of all brackets with defending state champion Eden earning a No. 4 seed. Depew, which went unbeaten in ECIC III, is the No. 1 seed, followed by Alden and City Honors, which played an independent schedule. Tonawanda, winners of seven in a row, drew a No. 5 seed and will play Eden on Thursday in quarterfinal action. Tonawanda no-hit Eden last Friday, costing the Raiders a chance to tie Alden for the ECIC IV title. No. 6 Maryvale and 11th-seeded East Aurora (10-5) meet Tuesday in a pre-quarterfinal between teams that went a combined 19-10 during the season. The winner of that game plays City Honors.

Class B-2 features a Cleveland Hill team that beat Eden twice, but the Golden Eagles will be a No. 4 seed and face fifth-seeded Falconer in the quarterfinals. Roy-Hart earned the top seed.

Other top seeds went to Olmsted (Class C) and Pine Valley (Class D).
