The city Democratic Committee has endorsed its slate of candidates for November’s Common Council elections.

Political newcomer, Navy veteran and retired electrician Gaeton “Guy” Godios was endorsed for the First Ward; incumbent Jackie Smilinich, a retired postmaster, for the Second Ward; Sean Rautenstrauch, a political newcomer and information technology operations manager, for the Third Ward; and Am-Pol Eagle editor Roger Puchalski for the Fourth Ward.

“It is especially exciting for me this year to offer experience along with entirely new faces to the political process,” party chair Gayle Syposs said in a statement.

They join the committee’s other endorsed candidates: Mark Doane for city court judge, Jenna Koch for council president, Ron Trabucco for city attorney, and Joseph Hogenkamp for city treasurer.

This week:

• The Common Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in City Hall, 200 Niagara St. An informal session begins at 6.

• Residents can meet informally with lawmakers from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Senior Center, 35 Main St. Joining 4th Ward Alderwoman Jenna N. Koch at “Council on Your Corner” will be 2nd Ward Alderwoman Jackie A. Smilinich. They will meet with seniors for the first hour, then with any other residents for the second hour. • A fundraiser for homeless veterans is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. May 30 in Gratwick Riverside Park in North Tonawanda. The third-year event, Kites for Vets, is sponsored by Vietnam Veterans of America No. 77 and this year features the Great Lakes Kitefliers Society. Admission to the family-friendly, non-alcohol event is free. Food will be sold and participants are asked to bring a chair. To reserve a kite, visit online at or call either 435-7210 or 515-5844.
