Sister Margaret Mahoney, lifelong educator

Feb. 18, 1921 – May 15, 2015

LEWISTON – Sister Margaret Mahoney, a lifelong educator, died Friday in Stella Niagara Health Center, Lewiston. She was 94.

Born in Buffalo, the former Sister Bernard earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Mount St. Joseph Teachers College in Buffalo and a master’s degree from Fordham University in New York.

A member of the Sisters of St. Francis, Sister Margaret began her teaching career at Sacred Heart School in Charleston, W.Va., and later taught at St. Joachim, St. Benedict, St. Ann, St. Lawrence, Stella Niagara, Bishop McMahon and Sacred Heart Academy, and St. Joseph, Gowanda, all in the Buffalo Diocese.

In 1988, she began working with the poor and disabled in Buffalo. She also worked with AIDS patients and in pastoral care at Buffalo General Hospital.

Sister Margaret became a resident of Stella Niagara Health Center in 2004.

A wake will be held Tuesday from 2 to 7 p.m.; a prayer service will be held in her memory at 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Sisters’ Chapel at Stella Niagara.
