FUN TIME – Rides, games and summer food favorites are among the attractions as Hammerl Amusements celebrates its 55th anniversary with a spring carnival this weekend in Maple Ridge Plaza, Maple and Sweet Home roads, Amherst.

Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. All children must be accompanied by an adult. A half-price $8 wristband provides admission to all rides Friday. There will be other ride specials Saturday and Sunday.

BOOKS FOR KIDS – More than 4,000 free books will be handed out to children and parents as part of the national First Book program by members of the Kenmore Teachers Association from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in Steelworkers Hall, 810 Sheridan Drive, Town of Tonawanda.

Assisting the teachers will be members of Steelworkers Local 135 and volunteers from the Sheridan Fire Company, the Western New York Area Labor Federation and the Clean Air Coalition.

GEARING UP – Bicyclist Jim “Jumbo” Griffin is hosting a beer blast from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday in Molly Maguire’s, 834 Abbott Road, to benefit the annual Ride for Roswell, which takes place June 27.
