As city lawmakers signed off on the final plans for funding the Crossroads Arena project, it was thought that the lease for the building then known as Marine Midland Arena, then as HSBC Arena and now as First Niagara Center would insure the Sabres stay in Buffalo until at least 2025.
Of course, the Sabres are still here — but not without some angst over ownership changes; potential ownership changes that might have included the Sabres' “sharing” a home with a Canadian city; owners under indictment; and bankruptcy.
