May 12, 1995: 'Motorist with a cellular phone' helps recover looted church vessels

Twenty years ago today, it was such a novel concept for a guy with a phone in his car to help police collar a bad guy, that the very idea was the lead sentence of a story on The News’ front page.

This bad guy was well worth chasing. Thousands of dollars worth of precious artifacts stolen from churches around the northeast were found in the trunk of this car.

"A keen-eyed priest, a motorist with a cellular phone and a dragnet by Town of Hamburg police Thursday afternoon netted a suspect carrying stolen church vessels worth at least $250,000, authorities said."
