The Canal Street String Band has a new CD, “Wah Hoo!,” and the band is rolling up the rugs for a CD release party Saturday in Pausa Art House. It promises to be quite the celebration of Americana. On the recording “City Fiddle,” Phil Banaszak, song scholar and mandolin ace Dave Ruch and Buffalo Music Hall of Famer Jim Whitford rock and reel their way through Cajun music, Western Swing, bluegrass, French Canadian dance music, traditional ballads and traditional folk songs with such alluring titles as “Bully in the Alley” and “McMinnville’s Breakdown.” Plus, there’s the sturdy old chestnut “I Had Someone Else Before I Had You (And I’ll Have Someone After You’ve Gone”).
There are a few originals, including “Phil’s Waltz,” “Wrap That Rascal” and “Canal Street Slide.” Gretchen Banaszak joins in now and then, too, on fiddle and vocals. Leaving just one question: Will the cozy confines of Pausa allow room for dancing? Find out at 8 p.m. Saturday in Pausa (19 Wadworth St.). Admission is $7 at the door. Call 697-9069.
