Angola mayor shares newfound idea on reuse of abandoned buildings

It is not uncommon for elected officials to borrow ideas from other municipalities, and Angola Mayor Howard M. “Hub” Frawley told the Village Board on Monday night that he has found an interesting one that he would like the board to consider.

It involves a new use for abandoned buildings. Some mayors with whom he talked at a recent conference in Saratoga Springs told him they found new uses for the properties.

“They tore down the entire building and left the front,” Frawley said.

With the front still up, some communities have put up a carousel or picnic areas, he said. Angola has facilities such as the former bowling alley, which he could envision having that type of use if the board decided to discuss such an idea in more detail.

In other matters:

• Frawley announced that he and village officials have a meeting scheduled with State Sen. Marc C. Panepinto, D-Buffalo, with regard to funding that his predecessor, Mark J. Grisanti, had put aside for various projects, including improvements for the Herman Playground, as well as for sidewalk improvements.

“We’re going to see if that money is still in Albany,” Frawley said.

• The board will hold its next regular meeting at 7 p.m. June 8 at Village Hall, 41 Commercial St.
