Driver arrested in Elmwood Avenue hit-and-run case that critically injured man

The driver who left the scene after his car truck a pedestrian on Elmwood Avenue Friday night was picked up by police and confessed his involvement, Buffalo Police spokesman Michael DeGeorge said Saturday.

The car was traced to South Buffalo about two hours later and the driver was brought to Police Headquarters for questioning.

Carl H. Nye III of Buffalo gave a statement admitting that he was the hit-and-run driver, DeGeorge said.

“He is expected to face multiple charges later,” DeGeorge said.

The victim, a 51-year-old man from Louisiana, was listed in critical condition Saturday in the trauma intensive-care unit of Erie County Medical Center. The victim was unconscious at the scene and suffered serious head and lower body injuries. His name was not disclosed.

The incident occurred about 7:45 p.m. Friday in the 1900 block of Elmwood. Witnesses said a black vehicle heading north sped away after striking the pedestrian, who was crossing the street near the intersection with Hertel Avenue.
