Red Wings give Babcock permission to interview for coaching jobs

The Detroit Red Wings appreciate all that Mike Babcock has done as their coach for the last decade. They're repaying the work by allowing him to talk with other teams about a job.

The Red Wings have granted Babcock, whose contract expires June 30, permission to interview around the league this month. The Sabres, of course, need to hire a coach.

The Sabres told The News on Friday they will not make any comments on their coaching search until a coach is hired.

General Manager Ken Holland held a noon news conference Friday to deliver the news. Here are tweets from Detroit Free Press writer Helene St. James.
