Canisius had a surprisingly short stay in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament, as the top-seeded Golden Griffins lost two games on Thursday and were eliminated from the competition. The MAAC Championships are taking place at the Demske Sports Complex at Canisius.
In the opening game, No. 5 Monmouth overwhelmed Canisius, 12-1, in a five-inning game in the quarterfinal round.
The Hawks broke the game open in the middle innings. They scored five runs in the top of the third to take a 6-0 lead. When Canisius answered with a run in the bottom of the third, Monmouth replied with four more runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth.
Jessica Berzins had the lone RBI for the Golden Griffins, as she went 2 for 2 at the plate. Canisius finished with three hits for the game.
The loss sent Canisius to the elimination round for a Thursday afternoon game. That one was closer, but third-seeded Manhattan ended Canisius’ season with a 2-1 victory.
Mickayla Romero hit a two-run homer for the Jaspers in the top of the first inning. The score stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh, when Berzins hit a single to drive in a run. However, Manhattan pitcher Amy Bright struck out the final Canisius batter to finish the game.
Canisius finished the season with a 26-19 record.
