Two decades later, the point was made moot by the onset of Dutch Elm disease, but 75 years ago this week, city fathers were weighing carefully the beauty — and replacement costs — of Elmwood Avenue’s beautiful canopy of elm trees.

While most agreed that widening the road would be useful, not all could agree on whether it was worth the loss of the mature-growth heritage elms that lined the street.
