Union Pleasant Elementary students in Hamburg will be wearing red and walking to mend the once-broken heart of one of their own, 6-year-old Grant Domogala.
The youngster underwent open heart surgery last month to repair a congenital heart defect, the third surgery in his young life.
His parents, Jessica and Justin, say Grant has become their “heart warrior,” for all he has had to endure. They were given little hope by doctors that he would survive past his fifth birthday. He underwent surgery April 20 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY.
His condition has sparked #prayersforgrant, and a Go Fund Me page to raise money to help cover medical costs.
Grant was in critical condition after surgery, but he has progressed and the ventilator was removed this week, according to the Facebook page, Grant’s Warriors, which reports that his favorite color is red, and he loves super heroes and Star Wars.
A school wide walkathon for kindergarten through fifth grades to help raise money for the family will take place from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Monday at the outdoor track at Union Pleasant Elementary School, 150 Pleasant Ave. The rain date is May 15.
