Bona softball bid ends early

St. Bonaventure’s stay at the Atlantic 10 Softball Championship in Amherst, Mass., was short and ended suddenly Wednesday.

Erica Reis of La Salle hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel the Explorers to a 4-3 victory and an end to the Bonnies’ season. Earlier, Bona lost to Fordham, 5-1, committing four errors, including three that led to four Fordham runs in the sixth inning.

Junior Emily Belfield hit a home run to give Bona a 1-0 lead in the second inning against Fordham. All the Rams’ runs in their four-run sixth inning came after two were out.

In the second game, Grace Rooney, who was 4 for 4, doubled home the tying run for Bona in the top of the seventh. The Bonnies had taken a 2-1 lead in the third on an RBI single by Kelli Rohan and a RBI double by Rooney, but Alicia Aughton’s two-run homer gave the Explorers a 3-2 lead in the fourth.
