Grigg-Lewis grant salvages canal film

LOCKPORT – An $11,300 grant from Lockport’s Grigg-Lewis Foundation enabled the Erie Canal Discovery Center to resume showings of its film on the canal, the center announced Tuesday.

The introductory movie shown in the center, “Gateways East and West,” was controlled by 10-year-old digital equipment which failed last fall. The grant was used to install new equipment, reformat the film and reprogram the computer to show it properly.

The Niagara County Historical Society, which operates the Discovery Center, said it couldn’t have afforded to cost of salvaging the movie, so it turned to the foundation, whose grant enabled the center to resume showings in time for this year’s tourist season.
