Rick Jeanneret says his top shelf call was inspired by Larry Playfair

Today is May Day, the first day of May.

Of course in Buffalo, May Day has an entirely different meaning, thanks to Pat LaFontaine, Brad May and Sabres play-by-play man Rick Jeanneret. (Thanks for the reminder on Twitter, Christopher Byrd.)

In a career full of memorable calls, it is arguably his most famous. But Jeanneret gives former analyst and longtime defenseman Larry Playfair an assist for creating one of his favorite recurring expressions following goals: “Top shelf, where Mama hides the cookies.”

Jeanneret told News TV Critic Alan Pergament that Playfair once said a player who shot up high to score went top shelf.

“I thought about a bit more about how to make it into something else so I added the cookies,” Jeanneret said.
