FORT ERIE, Ont. – A freak fire in the engine of a car carrier rig Friday morning on Pettit Road destroyed the rig and three of the 10 Ford SUVs it was hauling, Fort Erie Fire Chief Larry Coplen said.
The driver had noticed he was slowly losing engine power and pulled up next to the Flying J. Truck Stop at Pettit and Gilmore roads. As he got out of the rig, he noticed flames coming from the engine that kept getting bigger, the fire chief said.
It only took Fort Erie firefighters about 20 minutes to put out the fire. Total damages were estimated at $500,000 Canadian, Coplen said. No one was injured.
The fire remains under investigation. Coplen noted that the car carrier had been manufactured by the same firm that made a carrier that burst into flames outside that same truck stop in January, destroying four Toyota vehicles and causing smoke and water damage to the other vehicles on the rig.
