Hiring friends and relatives in government is nothing new, and City Hall is no exception. The payroll is populated with people who are related to each other. Some got there because they took a civil service test, others were hired based on their connections.
The tradition continued today, when paperwork in the city clerk's office was filed revealing that South Council Member Christopher P. Scanlon has hired his brother, Patrick, to be an intern in his office.
Scanlon said he needed to hire someone quickly, because a prior intern had left.
"He's got a political science degree from Fordham so he's more than qualified," the Council member said. "I needed someone on short notice."
Patrick Scanlon will earn $15 an hour as an intern, and will work part-time.
Patrick Scanlon had worked in city government before, on the South District impact team, his brother said.
