Dr. Michael Roizen is likely to smile at his surroundings later this month when he visits his hometown for a free lunchtime talk.
The Buffalo native, whose column with Dr. Mehmet Oz appears weekly in Refresh, will speak at noon Sept. 16 in Larkin Square, a slice of the city where developers Howard and Leslie Zemsky have taken the doctor’s healthy living message to heart.
Food Truck Tuesday rules for the first time this season require operators to provide at least one healthy option. A Thursday farmers’ market also was established to add to the growing mix of offerings at the square, 745 Seneca St.
“I thought back to a column last spring on 10 healthy things you can do for yourself and concluded, we are offering most of them at Larkin Square,” Leslie Zemsky said by email this week. “Exercise for fun (hula hooping), socialize, relax, drink red wine, eat healthy, etc.”
Zemsky oversees many of the activities in what has grown to become known as Larkinville, including the Larkin Square Author Series, of which Roizen will be a part.
Roizen, a Nichols School alumnus, is chief wellness officer and chair of the Wellness Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. He and Oz co-authored the best-selling series of health and wellness books called “YOU.”
During his stop in Buffalo, he plans to focus his talk on two books in the series: “YOU: On a Diet” and “YOU: The Owner’s Manual.” Publishers Weekly described the latter as “most useful to those who like their health lessons served with a side of humor.”
Books from the series, available through Talking Leaves, and food from a variety of vendors will be for sale during the hourlong event.
The Larkin Square Author Series is presented by First Niagara, and sponsored by Independent Health, Larkin Square and Talking Leaves Books. For more info, visit larkinsquare.com.
