WHEATFIELD – A 79-year-old woman at Elderwood told Niagara County sheriff’s deputies Wednesday that a man told her she had won $2 million in the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes on Tuesday and had asked which bank she uses and for her social security number to verify she was the correct recipient.

The victim said she provided her social security number. The man then told the victim that she had to provide $3,500 as a processing fee to get the prize money, which she did not provide.

The victim’s daughter called the man back and told him the Publisher’s Clearinghouse website said no processing fees are applied to winners. The suspect told the daughter he would be calling to make arrangements to present the check, but did not call back.

Deputies advised the daughter to take identity theft precautions.
