The tease of love

Allison Bisco and Bradley Mair knew each other since kindergarten, and were schoolmates until they both graduated from Iroquois High School. All that time, though, romance was never in the air.

They ran with different crowds, explained Allison, who goes by Allie. When their paths did cross, things were rocky.

“He used to tease me all the time,” she said. “It was all in good humor. But he teased me mercilessly, about anything he could find. I had some people say, ‘Well, that means he likes you.’ I would think, I don’t know if that’s the case.”

Maybe it was. Because, five years after they graduated from high school, love stepped in.

It happened in Boca Raton, Fla., where Allie was working as a choral director at Pine Crest School, a private elementary and middle school. Out of the blue, she got an instant message. It was from Brad. He had moved to Boca Raton for work reasons. And he asked her, did she want to grab coffee?

Startled but amused, she agreed to meet him at Starbucks.

There are a million Starbucks down in Florida, she laughed, so at first they found themselves at separate ones. After that was straightened out, though, all the confusion was over.

“We hit it off immediately,” she said. “We graduated at 18, met again at 23. I knew immediately I wanted to pursue him,” she confessed. “After we had coffee I asked if I could see his car. I was pretending to be interested in cars. I really just wanted to spend more time with him.”

The feeling was mutual. Now, asked on the phone what he used to harangue her about, Bradley paused, as if puzzled.

“I don’t know,” he said.

Allie doesn’t even remember either.

“It’s amazing what five years can do,” she said. “He had stopped teasing me.”
