Mike Andrzejewski is opening his new space in the Hotel @ the Lafayette, called Bourbon and Butter. A lucky few got a sneak preview to sample some of the offerings, while the general public receives its first chance at the grand opening from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Bourbon and Butter is in the Art Deco bar space on the northern side of the Lafayette, down the corridor from where Mike A @ Hotel Lafayette -- now a banquet space -- was situated.

The rearranged space, situated at 391 Washington St. in downtown Buffalo, looks like a 1930s cocktail bar but is actually new-fashioned in the Art Deco tradition. There are unusual and atmospheric cocktails.

The 100th Problem incorporated absinthe. The other ingredients, as if it matters, were gin, cucumber, vanilla, eucalyptus and charred lemon sour.

The bar had many retro features that would make you think they were original to the Lafayette. The candles were reportedly surplus from St. Michael's Church.

The menu offerings were varied and creative. They were developed by Andrzejewski and Chef Christopher Daigler. Manager Jerry McCarthy said that Mike A's mission was "that his guests will enjoy more flavor, not more food."

There was Brown Bread, made from Mike A's grandmother's recipe. It was made with golden raisins and served with the signature Bourbon Butter.

The Korean Kalbi Beef Steamed Bun featured mild kimchee and sriracha mayo.

Oysters were dressed with saffron and chorizo aioli.

Bourbon and Butter will be open from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, in addition to late-night dining on the weekends. You can find Bourbon and Butter's lunch, tasting, small plate and entree menus at this link.
