Reichert sets North golf mark
Ben Reichert is a two-time state golf tournament qualifier so he’s already shown he’s got plenty of game. The junior now has a record to go with it.
The Williamsville North golfer fired a 4-under-par 32 at Westwood Country Club on Wednesday to help lead the Spartans to a 247-304 triumph over Sweet Home.
Reichert strung together four straight birdies on holes No. 3 through six during his record-setting round. He broke the North mark of 3-under-par 33 shared by Jake Katz – who achieved the feat twice, and John Weiser.
“It’s a great achievement for anybody to go 4 under par in high school golf,” Spartans coach John Burns said. “It’s such a short round. That’s a great achievement for him to do that, especially to start off our season that way.”
Canisius kicks away Aquinas
School hasn’t been back in session too long, but Canisius has already aced one tough soccer assignment.
The Crusaders earned a 2-1 overtime win over Rochester-area power Aquinas on Wednesday at Koessler Field at the Stransky Complex in West Seneca.
Wes Rider scored the game-winner with 40 seconds left in overtime after a Canisius player got tackled inside the 18-yard line, resulting in a red card versus the Little Irish player and free kick.
“Aquinas is a strong program. They’re always competitive,” first-year Canisius coach Chris Stuff said. “I would’ve liked to have had a few warmup games before facing them. … We hung with them.”
Will Bolton also scored for the Crusaders, who won last year’s regular season Monsignor Martin Association title but lost in the playoff semifinals to St. Joe’s.

• Melissa Postek recorded five of her team-high 20 kills in the decisive fifth set, while fellow co-captain Jessica Miller added 14 kills as Williamsville South rallied to beat Hamburg, 22-25, 17-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-18 in ECIC II girls volleyball.
