Dec. 15, 1943 – Aug. 31, 2014
Carol Ann Emerling, a retired reading specialist and elementary school teacher, known for her love of children, nature, travel and impromptu adventure, died Sunday in her Hamburg home. She was 70.
Mrs. Emerling was a graduate of South Park High School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University at Buffalo.
Her nearly 20-year career in Buffalo Public Schools included teaching third- and fourth-graders and helping children read. She was selected for special training in remedial reading, which led her to work with Spanish-speaking students learning English as a second language at the now-defunct School 1 on Busti Avenue.
“She enjoyed working with those kids,” said Noel Emerling, her husband of 42 years. “She had great success.”
Mrs. Emerling enjoyed traveling in Europe, South America and throughout the United States. Trips she took after her retirement in 1985 included visiting Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park with her husband.
This year, during her illness, she took pleasure in her garden and hummingbirds at the feeder.
One evening in May, after noticing that Rod Stewart was performing a concert in downtown Buffalo, she managed an unlikely coup. Within about an hour of learning about the concert in the newspaper – it was about 6:15 p.m. – she and her husband were watching the show from seats just a few rows from the stage.
She was delighted by the series of lucky breaks that led them there. After first being told the show was sold out, two good tickets materialized as she talked with the ticket seller over the phone. The couple then made the drive from Hamburg, found parking in spite of gridlock traffic by turning the wrong way down a one-way street. They then got ahead in line when a new ticket window opened and settled into their seats 10 minutes before the show started at 7:30 p.m.
“It just worked out perfectly,” said Emerling. “She was so happy about that.”
Survivors include her husband.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the chapel at Forest Lawn, 1411 Delaware Ave.
