Countdown to Friday Night Lights: Class C

Who’s who: The six-team North Division consists of the Akron Tigers, Cleveland Hill Golden Eagles, JFK Bears, Lackawanna Steelers, Silver Creek/Forestville Black Knights and Wilson Lakemen.

The six-team South Division consists of the Allegany-Limestone Gators, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley Falcons, Gowanda Panthers, Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake Thunder Dragons, Salamanca Warriors and Southwestern Trojans.

This year’s alignment shift: Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake moves up from Class D while Silver Creek/Forestville moves over from C South to C North. Departed are longtime power Fredonia (to B South) as well as Tonawanda (to B Central) and Newfane (to B North).

Last year’s champion: Cleveland Hill won its second straight Section VI title and advanced to the state final four for the first time in program history.

Last year’s records: C North – Cleveland Hill 11-1, 6-0; Akron 6-3, 5-1; Lackawanna 5-4, 4-2; JFK 2-7, 1-5; Wilson 0-9, 0-6. C South – Salamanca 6-2, 5-1; Southwestern 4-4, 4-2; Falconer 2-6, 2-4; Cassadaga Valley 1-6, 0-4; Allegany/Limestone 4-5, 2-4; Gowanda 2-7, 1-5; Silver Creek/Forestville 1-7, 1-5. Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake 7-2, 3-1 in Class D.

2013 All-Western New York underclassmen: None.

2013 all-league first-team underclassmen: Akron DB Chaunce Hill-11, Silver Creek OL Dylan Robinson-11, Silver Creek DL Mike Priest-11, Silver Creek LB Sherman Williams-11, Falconer DL Jacob Penhollow-11, Southwestern LB Jordan Bryerton-11, Salamanca DB Tyler Siperek-11. MG/CL had four in D: Ryan Miller-11, Mitch Sandberg-10, AJ Hulton-11 and Chandler Baker-11.

Week One (Sept. 5-6) must-see games: There are four league games to get started as well as two intriguing nonleaguers on Friday night: Cleve Hill is at rival (and Class B school) Maryvale while Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake hosts old friend – and two-time defending Class D state champion – Randolph.
