Erie County posts job for new Social Services commissioner

Erie County put up a job posting for a new commissioner for the Department of Social Services on its website, but county officials said it was not an indication that the current commissioner, Carol Dankert-Maurer, is leaving.

According to Brian Bray, special assistant to the commissioner of social services, the position is up for reappointment at the end of the year.

While many commissioner positions in county government are appointed at the time a new administration takes over, others – such as the social services commissioner – are appointed for a specific five-year term.

Dankert-Maurer was appointed commissioner of social services five years ago under the administration of then-County Executive Chris Collins.

Her term expires at the end of 2014.

“The (current) administration is considering new applicants. If Carol applies again, they’ll consider her as well,” Bray said.

As commissioner of social services, Dankert-Maurer has faced criticism following the deaths of three children whose cases had been referred to Child Protective Services, which is a division of the Department of Social Services.

Even in the wake of criticism, County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz has in the recent past defended Dankert-Maurer’s performance and her abilities at leading the Department of Social Services.
