Lockport awaits “watered-down” Fallen Heroes design

LOCKPORT – The stalled push for a Fallen Heroes Memorial in Outwater Park could be restarted with a scaled-back effort, Alderwoman Kathryn J. “Kitty” Fogle said Wednesday.

“We’re waiting for watered-down plans from Rolando,” Fogle said, referring to Rolando Moreno, the city’s assistant engineering director. Fogle said the design is done, but the city’s large-format printer is broken, so the plan can’t be printed.

The committee directing the plan hasn’t met since February, but in March Fogle and co-chairman Kenneth M. Genewick, the 5th Ward alderman, said the plan was being scaled back from a $350,000 complex that was meant to honor anyone from the Lockport area who died in the line of duty in the military, police or fire work, plus civilian “Good Samaritans.”

The effort began more than a year ago as a substitute for renaming a city park after a Lockport native, the late Buffalo Police Officer Patricia Parete, which the Common Council didn’t want to do.

Only $3,900 has been raised, and Wednesday the Council voted to have Lockport Main Street Inc. hold that money, after state auditors objected to the city holding donations for a not-for-profit group’s project.
