Lackawanna woman dies after being rescued from apartment fire

A Lackawanna woman died Wednesday evening from smoke inhalation and burns suffered in a kitchen fire in her apartment earlier that morning, according to Lackawanna police.

Kelly Dycha, 44, died at Erie County Medical Center, where she was taken after firefighters responded at about 5 a.m. to her upstairs apartment at 217 Kirby Ave. Firefighters found her unconscious in the apartment.

Lackawanna Police Captain Joseph Leo said it may have been an electrical fire, but the cause is still being investigated.

Dycha’s father woke up Wednesday morning, smelled smoke and notified the fire department at 5:44 a.m., Leo said.

The flames had blocked the stairwell upstairs, preventing Dycha from escaping. Firefighters made their way in, tamed the flames and got Dycha out.
