The victim of a boating accident on Lake Ontario Tuesday afternoon was identified today as Christian Gothgen, 49, of Snyder, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department reported.
Gothgen was operating a Sailfish single-man craft when it flipped over and struck him, said Coast Guard Officer Jason Yonk. The overturned boat was spotted just west of Olcott Harbor, and rescue teams found the man in the water around 4:12 p.m.
Members of the Olcott Volunteer Fire Department attempted to revive Gothgen, who apparently was tossed from the craft and hit a shoal, Yonk reported. Gothgen was transported to Eastern Niagara Hospital in Newfane, where he was pronounced dead.
The sheriff’s office had received multiple 9-11 calls from onlookers reporting an overturned boat.
Coast Guard officers reported winds from 18 to 21 mph at the time of the incident. Small craft advisories are normally issued when winds exceed 25 mph.
Niagara County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division and Criminal Investigation Bureau are continuing the investigation.
