Firefighters rescue woman from Lackawanna house fire

Firefighters rescued an unconscious woman from a second-floor apartment fire in Lackawanna early this morning.

Firefighters found her on the floor of the kitchen, where the fire appeared to have started around 5 a.m. The fire occurred in the rear upper apartment at 217 Kirby Ave.

She is at Erie County Medical Center and is in critical condition from smoke inhalation and burns, according to Lackawana Police Captain Joseph Leo.

Leo said it may have been an electrical fire, but the cause is still under investigation.

The woman’s parents live in the downstairs apartment. Her father woke up, smelled smoke and notified the fire department around 5:44 a.m., Leo said.

The flames had blocked the stairwell, preventing the woman from being able to escape. Fire fighters made their way in, tamed the flames and got the unconscious woman out of the home, according to Leo.
