Camp capsule: Brooks steps in

Wednesday: Day 18 of 20.

Sidelined: Cornerback Leodis McKelvin left practice with a groin injury. His status is uncertain. Rookie receiver Sammy Watkins (ribs) dressed but didn’t participate in team drills. Not suited up were cornerbacks Mario Butler (ankle) and Bobby Felder (groin). The Bills placed linebacker Stevenson Sylvester (knee) on injured reserve.

Thad Lewis on the outs? For the second straight practice, backup quarterback Thad Lewis saw no meaningful action in team drills. Jeff Tuel took all of the second-team snaps. Lewis was the primary backup last year and started five games.

Back in the mix: Cornerback Ron Brooks, perhaps on the roster’s outer fringes earlier this summer, took first-team reps with McKelvin out and Corey Graham working at safety.

Schedule: The last practice that’s open to the public happens at 2 p.m. today at St. John Fisher College. The Bills will hold a walkthrough there Friday and then break camp. Their preseason home opener is Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
