The tug Syracuse began its annual inspection of the New York State canal system Tuesday, departing from Canalside in downtown Buffalo, the New York State Canal Corp. reports.

The inspection team aboard the Syracuse will check locks and lift bridges across the state during the next two months, issuing grades for each one. The best of them will be honored with awards later this year.

Canal Corp. director Brian U. Stratton took part in the first leg of the inspection Tuesday between Buffalo and Lockport, accompanied by local officials.
